Health classes explained

Preferred Plus, Preferred, Standard Plus and Standard: what they mean and what determines placement.

Insurers classify term coverage by rate class. Terminology shifts between companies, but the framework stays consistent: Preferred Plus (sometimes called Super Preferred or Preferred Best), Preferred, Standard Plus, Standard, and table ratings for heightened risk. Smokers occupy a separate tier at elevated rates.

What underwriters look at

Body measurements and weight, blood pressure and cholesterol values, family history of early heart disease or cancer, driving behavior, prescription drugs, work and recreational activities, and smoking or nicotine use. Top classes require nearly clean scores across all factors; Preferred tolerates a bit more; Standard Plus and Standard accept managed conditions, like treated high blood pressure.

How to use the quote tool

Be honest on the health question: Excellent aligns with Preferred Plus, Very good with Preferred, Good with Standard Plus and Average with Standard. Your quote reflects that class; underwriting confirms the true class later. In doubt? Get quotes at two classes and weigh them. Overstating health does not cut your cost; it just makes the estimate wrong.

Susman Insurance Agency can identify carriers whose standards are more favorable for your health profile—often more important than the advertised rate.
